TUI Cruises makes significant progress towards climate-neutral cruising: Mein Schiff Relax, the newest member of the fleet, was refueled with bio-LNG for the first time in the port of Barcelona.
Bio-LNG is a 100% renewable fuel produced from organic waste. Compared to fossil fuels, its use can reduce greenhouse gas emissions by between 70% and 100%, depending on the origin of the organic materials.
Furthermore, the TUI Cruises fleet reached another milestone this year: more than one million kWh of electricity will have already been consumed in port by 2025. So far, ships from the Hapag-Lloyd Cruises and Mein Schiff brands have successfully used green electricity in 57 port calls.

Advances in the availability and scalability of alternative fuels will contribute decisively to enabling climate-neutral cruises by 2050 at the latest. Further steps are still needed, which we at TUI are constantly monitoring and implementing together with the TUI Cruises team: expanding the infrastructure for the use of green electricity in port, increasing energy efficiency, and optimizing itineraries and routes to reduce energy consumption. With this first delivery of bio-LNG, TUI Cruises reinforces its pioneering role in making the cruise industry more sustainable,” says Sebastian Ebel, CEO of TUI.
Because bio-LNG is chemically identical to fossil LNG, it can be used in the Mein Schiff Relax's dual-fuel engines without any technical modifications. All new ships in the Mein Schiff fleet are equipped with dual-fuel engines and technically designed to run on lower-emission fuels, such as bio-LNG. The Mein Schiff 7, which entered service last year, is already prepared for the future use of green methanol.
By 2030 at the latest, the TUI Group will reduce its absolute CO₂e emissions in the cruise business (which includes the Hapag-Lloyd Cruises, Mein Schiff and British Marella Cruises brands) by 27.5% compared to 2019.
