Port Canaveral has once again obtained Green Marine certification, underlining the Port's commitment to environmental excellence in port operations.
This marks the Port's eighth consecutive certification by the international organization. The award was presented to the Port at the GreenTech2024 environmental conference recently held in Halifax, Nova Scotia.
“Port Canaveral has long maintained a high level of environmental responsibility with our commitment to long-term sustainability goals,” said Captain John Murray, CEO of the Port. “This Green Marine recertification underscores the quality of our environmental program and our team’s dedication to best practices in planning, implementing, and managing our efforts.”
Port Canaveral is one of 32 U.S. seaports and one of only three ports in Florida to have earned the Green Marine designation. For the Port's initial certification in 2016, Green Marine's detailed criteria for specific performance indicators helped Port Canaveral benchmark its environmental performance.
“Once again, for the eighth consecutive year, the Port is exceeding compliance with all applicable indicators,” stated Green Marine President and CEO David Bolduc. “Port Canaveral is also achieving the highest level 5 for the spill prevention indicator, demonstrating environmental excellence and leadership.”
Bob Musser, Senior Director of Environment at Port Canaveral, attended the conference and accepted the certification on behalf of Port Canaveral. “For eight years, we have actively participated in this valuable program, continually raising the bar for our environmental performance. Our ultimate goal is to adopt and implement greener practices with each assessment.”
Green Marine promotes voluntary protection measures to continuously improve environmental performance.
Certification is a process in which guiding principles are developed that go beyond compliance with regulations in key areas such as invasive aquatic species, greenhouse gases and air pollutants, spill prevention, stormwater and waste management, underwater noise, community impact and environmental leadership.
The criteria are used to assess the performance of participants in Green Marine during an annual self-assessment and a biennial third-party verification, designed to improve awareness of the marine industry's activities and environmental benefits.
Green Marine is an international certification program that includes ports, terminal operators, shipyards, and shipowners. Port Canaveral joined the Green Marine program in 2016
