The Port of Copenhagen Malmö has new records in sight, expecting 50,000 passengers and 18 cruise ship calls in Copenhagen and Visby during the low season months, from November to January 2024.
This is very positive news for both guests and destinations. For Copenhagen, it's a unique opportunity for visitors to experience the Danish capital in new ways, and for visitors to Visby, a medieval UNESCO World Heritage city, to discover the Swedish island of Gotland during the winter. For local businesses and cultural institutions, it's a chance to connect with visitors during what is typically the off-season for tourism.
The specific work of all the agents has borne fruit and more and more cruise companies are deciding to make a stop in Visby and Copenhagen in late autumn and winter, either as one-off cruises or like the AidaNova, from Aida Cruises, in its winter deployment in the Nordic region, with a total of 7 stops in Copenhagen, and the Hanseatic Nature, from Hapag Lloyd, with 5 stops in Copenhagen and Visby.
In addition, a large number of cruise ships call at CMP around the festive turn of the year 2023/2024: this December, CMP expects 7 Christmas calls in Copenhagen, 2 in Visby and, in addition, 2 cruise ships are expected to spend New Year's Eve in Copenhagen.
“CMP is working with all stakeholders in the destination, including cruise lines, CruiseCopenhagen, Cruise Baltic, and other ports in the region, to create products and offerings that reflect the different seasons. Our goal is to further extend the season into the autumn, winter, and spring months to complement the already successful summer season and create a year-round experience. This is an ongoing project, but we are seeing great interest from cruise companies, which motivates us to continue working,” says Luis De Carvalho, Commercial Director of Cruises at the Port of Copenhagen Malmö.
CMP expects a total of approximately 389 cruise ship calls and 940,000 passengers in Malmö, Visby, and Copenhagen in 2023. Looking ahead, there is another exciting record on the horizon: in 2024, CMP expects to welcome cruise ships to Copenhagen year-round for the first time ever, proving that Copenhagen truly is an amazing year-round destination.
Copenhagen Ports (CMP) aspires to become one of the world's most sustainable ports and is well on its way to achieving carbon neutrality in its own operations by 2025. Between 2020 and 2022, CMP reduced CO2 emissions from its own operations (GHG Scope 1+2) by 57%. This equates to a reduction of 1,231 tonnes of CO2e. From 2025, CMP expects to be able to supply shore power to cruise ships docking in Copenhagen.
