Yesterday, June 8th, was World Oceans Day, declared by the United Nations with the intention of raising awareness of the dangers that exist today for the sea and all its species, and thus, begin to take action.
TUI Cruises has begun to address this issue by implementing protocols across its Mein Schiff fleet that range from the economical use of seawater and freshwater to wastewater treatment. All wastewater produced on board is mechanically, biologically, and chemically treated using dedicated treatment plants and disinfected with ultraviolet (UV) light. Only treated wastewater is discharged, and only outside the designated 3- or 12-nautical-mile zones.
In addition, the company has sustainable projects focused on marine conservation and raising awareness among its cruise ship guests.
One of the fleet's ships (Mein Schiff 1) was recently refitted with the HELCOM upgrade to meet established wastewater limits for phosphate and nitrate in seas like the Baltic. This system will enable it to treat wastewater in the Baltic Sea in the future.
The company aims to contribute to the 2030 Sustainability Strategy with the goal of offering climate-neutral cruises by that date.
