The prestigious Excellence Cruise Awards, a benchmark in the international cruise industry, will arrive in Tenerife on March 6th with a grand awards gala, which will take place at the Tenerife Auditorium.
This will be the sixteenth awards ceremony organized by Cruises News Media Group, which have previously taken place in cities such as Barcelona, Palma, Malaga, Cartagena, A Coruña and Las Palmas de Gran Canaria.
In November and December 2022, the five ports managed by the Santa Cruz de Tenerife Port Authority received a similar number of cruise passengers to the same months in 2019, before the pandemic. Furthermore, 290 cruise ship calls are expected for the first four months of 2023.
The figure rises to 573 stops if we consider the forecast for the whole year 2023, with 313 stops in Santa Cruz de Tenerife, 144 in Santa Cruz de la Palma, 88 in San Sebastián de La Gomera, 24 in La Estaca and 4 in Los Cristianos.
On January 1, 2020, new atmospheric emissions restrictions set by the International Maritime Organization came into effect, leading most cruise ships to install gas scrubbing systems that reduce sulfur and particulate emissions by 97%. Those ships unable to install these innovative systems must use low-sulfur fuel. In recent years, cruise ships powered by liquefied natural gas (LNG) have also begun to enter service. In addition to eliminating sulfur and particulate emissions, these ships reduce CO2 emissions by 30%. Aidanova, Iona, Arvia, and Silver Nova are some of these ships that will visit the ports of Santa Cruz de Tenerife and Santa Cruz de la Palma.
The winners of the Cruise Excellence Awards are chosen by cruise passengers and travel agencies through online voting, and they reward everything from the best ships, to the best gastronomy, the best itinerary, or even the best onboard entertainment, up to a total of 16 categories.
The ceremony will bring together top executives from cruise shipping companies, shipping agents, cruise tour operators, ports and destinations, travel agents, press, collaborators, professionals and businesspeople from Tenerife and other suppliers in the sector, who will enjoy a unique gala at the Tenerife Auditorium followed by a cocktail dinner.
This edition has been promoted and sponsored by the Port Authority of Tenerife in collaboration with other public and private organizations such as State Ports. The possibility of welcoming more sponsors is still open.
