Costa Cruises and the Barcelona Food Bank have renewed their partnership to help the city's most vulnerable residents. This initiative aligns with Sustainable Development Goal 12.3 of the 2030 Agenda, which focuses on "responsible consumption and production.".
Food prepared on board but not served is donated through food banks to local organizations that support people in need and at risk of social exclusion. This project is part of Costa's extensive Food Assistance Program, which, since its inception, has distributed more than 1.1 million meals to people in need across 15 destinations where our ships are based, thanks to the collaboration of local partners.
In Barcelona, the Banc dels Aliments will distribute them directly to the Fundació Acollida i Esperança and the Hogar Nuestra Señora de Lourdes.
“This is an unprecedented project in the cruise sector which, together with the Barcelona Food Bank, offers a platform to build a fairer and more inclusive society. We have been actively present in Barcelona for a long time, and this initiative represents yet another concrete example of our commitment and responsibility not only to achieve the goals of the 2030 Agenda, but also to accelerate change and provide the impetus for a more sustainable future for the communities in which we operate,” stated Davide Triacca, Director of Sustainability at Costa Cruises.
Bosco Fonts, director of the Barcelona Food Bank, added: “The Barcelona Food Bank welcomes the renewal of this commitment by Costa Cruises, which is fully aligned with the mission of Food Banks to reduce food waste by recovering surplus food. This action helps guarantee the right to sufficient and healthy food for people at risk of food insecurity.”.
Costa Cruises has been implementing its Sustainability Agenda since 2015 with the aim of developing its business while generating a positive impact on the environment. Therefore, following this project in Barcelona, the company intends to extend the initiative to other ports to achieve a positive social and economic impact on the local communities of its various destinations.
