The Port of Barcelona will be the home port this year for some of the most efficient and modern cruise ships in the current global fleet, vessels that incorporate the latest technologies in environmental sustainability. The forecast for cruise ship calls in 2022 is approximately 800, 53% of which will be from ships less than 10 years old. Specifically, a dozen ships that began sailing this year will dock at the Catalan port's piers, including: Royal Caribbean's Wonder of the Seas; Carnival Cruise Line's Seabourn Venture; and MSC Cruises' MSC Seascape and MSC World Europe, among others.
Despite the health crisis caused by Covid, the Port of Barcelona is regaining the confidence of all cruise lines and adding two more: Virgin Voyages, which will debut in Barcelona in May with 23 confirmed calls, and Ritz-Carlton Yacht Collection, a luxury brand that will begin operating this year.
By 2030, the Port of Barcelona aims to have all cruise ship berths, the Prat Wharf, and the ferry terminals at the Sant Bertran Basin and the Costa Wharf electrified. The Port of Barcelona is also enhancing environmental incentives for shipowners to promote vessel improvements in terms of efficiency and reduced emissions, attracting cleaner, less polluting ships to the port and contributing to improved air quality throughout the port area and the city.
