In an imaginative ceremony held today at the Port of Los Angeles, television stars and hosts served as godparents for the official christening of the Discovery Princess. Among the godparents were fashion designer Randy Fenoli, chef Alex Guarnaschelli, special effects designer and fabricator Adam Savage, and real estate agent Page Turner.
Standing by the retreat pool on the open deck of the Discovery Princess with the ship's captain, Gennaro Arma, they said, “We have named this ship 'Discovery Princess.' May God bless her and all who sail on her.” They then tossed a giant bottle of champagne against the ship's hull, officially welcoming the Discovery Princess to the Princess Cruises fleet.
The “Discover Our World” themed ceremony blended maritime tradition with contemporary elements, celebrating the cruise line’s unique Discovery at SEA™ program, which brings the spirit of curiosity and exploration to every cruise through brand experiences such as Shark Week at Sea, exclusive shore excursions, and onboard activities such as Camp Discovery and Stargazing at SEA youth centers.
“Today is a celebration to remember, as our newest ship, the Discovery Princess, is officially named after this group of experts and personalities: Randy, Alex, Adam, and Page,” said John Padgett, president of Princess Cruises. “We couldn’t think of more fitting godparents to mark this significant milestone.”.
The Discovery Princess expands the cruise line's MedallionClass fleet to 15 ships, offering elegantly decorated accommodations, entertainment, gourmet dining and cocktails, spacious outdoor dining areas and expansive views from the Sky Suites balconies.
The Discovery Princess, with a capacity for 3,660 passengers, was built at the Fincantieri shipyards in Monfalcone, Italy, and is the sixth and final newly built Royal Class ship that shares all the spectacular style and luxury of its sister ships: Enchanted Princess®, Sky Princess®, Majestic Princess®, Regal Princess® and Royal Princess®.
The Discovery Princess debuted in Los Angeles on March 27, embarking on a series of voyages along the Mexican Riviera and the California coast from March 27 to April 24. Following its christening ceremony in Los Angeles on April 29, the ship will head to the Pacific coast to begin a season of seven-day Alaskan cruises from Seattle, becoming the newest ship to sail the Alaskan region.
