The Hurtigruten ship Richard With will be the first of three Norwegian Coastal Express vessels owned by the Norwegian company Hurtigruten to be converted from diesel to battery-powered hybrid propulsion. The 11,205-gross-ton ship, built in 1993, arrived at the Norwegian shipyard Myklebust Verft on February 4th to begin its major conversion from diesel to a battery-powered hybrid system over the next seven months.
The same conversion project will be carried out on the sister ships “Nordlys” and “Kong Harald”, and all three ships will be back in service in 2023.
“These improvements will reduce CO2 emissions by at least 25% and NOx emissions by a massive 80%,” said Hurtigruten Group CEO Daniel Skjeldam.
