On December 2nd, Las Palmas de Gran Canaria will host the Cruise Excellence Awards Gala, awards given since 2008 by Cruises News Media Group, which also organizes the International Cruise Summit in Madrid and publishes CruisesNews magazine.
In 2019, nearly 1.5 million cruise passengers called at the ports of the Port Authority of Las Palmas: Port of Las Palmas, Port of Arinaga, Port of Salinetas, Port of Arrecife, and Port of Rosario. In 2020, activity slowed due to the global COVID-19 pandemic, but the Port of Las Palmas de Gran Canaria was the first Spanish port to resume operations. The cruise season began on October 3, 2020, after seven months of inactivity, welcoming the Mein Schiff 2 from the German company TUI Cruises and marking the restart of cruises in Spanish ports. By the end of the current 2021-2022 season, the Port Authority of Las Palmas anticipates exceeding half a million cruise passengers, excellent news for the sector as it begins its recovery.
The Cruises News Media Group Excellence Awards for Cruises are decided each year by an open vote among cruise passengers and travel agents, but this time, due to the extraordinary conditions suffered by the industry globally during 2020, they will be awarded to shipping lines and industry leaders to recognize the resilience and reactivation of cruises.
The ceremony will bring together top executives from cruise shipping companies, cruise tour operators, shipping agents, ports and destinations, travel agents, press, collaborators, professionals and businesspeople from the Canary Islands and other suppliers in the sector.
Guests will enjoy a special gala held at the Hotel Santa Catalina, followed by dinner at the Bodegón del Pueblo Canario, at this fourteenth edition of the awards, previously held in A Coruña, Cartagena, Barcelona, Málaga, Bilbao and Palma de Mallorca.
This edition, promoted and sponsored by Puertos de Las Palmas, the Las Palmas City Council, Turismo de las Islas Canarias, Turismo de Gran Canaria, also has the sponsorship of Puertos del Estado and Global Ports Holding.
