The naming ceremony for P&O Cruises' newest ship, Iona, took place on May 16, 2021, in Southampton and was a memorable evening, streamed online by the company. The event featured Paul Ludlow, Chairman of P&O Cruises; Dame Irene Hays, owner and chairwoman of Hays Travel Group, as the ship's godmother; and an incredible performance by one of the greatest singer-songwriters, Gary Barlow, musical director of The 710 Club, aboard Iona.
The Iona is the first British cruise ship powered by liquefied natural gas (LNG), as well as the largest cruise ship ever built for the UK market. At 185,000 tons, 345 meters long, and with 17 decks, passengers will be eager to come aboard after last year's travel bans.
The Iona will also usher in a new era in cruise vacations, with many first-of-its-kind features, such as the two-deck SkyDome. Its glass dome roof and spacious layout offer unparalleled, relaxing views of the sky and sea. The SkyDome is a tranquil poolside setting by day, with dining and entertainment by night, including breathtaking, specially commissioned air shows under the stars.
Guests can also create their own gins at the first gin distillery at sea or relax in the Oasis Spa, which offers a range of destination-themed treatments. Iona also boasts eight specialty restaurants and 13 entertainment venues, four swimming pools, including a spectacular infinity pool at the stern of the ship, and 16 whirlpools.
To kick off the Iona's special inaugural season, P&O Cruises' new holiday series includes a seven-night inaugural voyage sailing the Scottish islands. The Iona will anchor off Iona, the island for which it is named, with an extended stay until sunset to enjoy magical views of the historic coastline.
