Danish expedition cruise operator Albatros Expeditions, part of Albatros Travel Group, has announced the successful sea trials of its new expedition cruise ship, Ocean Victory, which will produce the lowest greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions per passenger in the industry.
The ship's environmental performance is due to its unique features. Hans Lagerweij, the company's president, explains: “The Ocean Victory has engines that limit the amount of nitrous oxides; we only burn marine diesel, which emits less CO2; we have Ulstein's patented and revolutionary X-bow, which is very efficient, especially in rougher seas; and the Ocean Victory has a fully optimized, compact design, offering comfortable space for 185 guests in just 104 meters of length.”.
According to Albatros Travel Group owner and founder Søren Rasmussen, the ship consumes 60% less energy. Søren is proud that the Ocean Victory supports Albatros Travel's sustainable vision, stating, "We received our first sustainable travel award in 1997 and continue working to aim higher and find new solutions.".
The Ocean Victory is 104 meters long, 18 meters wide, and has 93 spacious cabins. The vessel is part of a new generation of energy-efficient ships and is of the highest ice class, 1A, polar code 6. It has been built with safe return to port, dynamic positioning, and zero-speed stabilizers, and features an interior design with Nordic touches.
The ship will be operated by Albatros Expeditions in Antarctica, with the first voyage scheduled for November 2021. In the summer season, the ship will operate in Alaska for Victory Cruise Lines.
The Ocean Victory will be joined by its sister ship, the Ocean Albatros, in October 2022. The Ocean Albatros will be operated by Albatros Expeditions year-round in the Antarctic and Arctic and will also offer the innovative and unique “Remote Islands of the Mid Atlantic” voyage.
