The Port Authority of Las Palmas has launched a public tender to select a company interested in investing in and managing a new cruise terminal in the port of Las Palmas (Gran Canaria), as well as improving the current facilities in the ports of Arrecife (Lanzarote) and Puerto del Rosario (Fuerteventura).
The Port Authority of Las Palmas handles over 500 cruise ships and 1.5 million cruise passengers annually, a figure that has doubled in the last decade and continues to grow. The goal is to leverage the strength of the existing network, improving both quality and competitiveness to meet the demands and challenges facing the cruise industry. The new facilities will ensure the continuity of current operations and help attract future traffic.
With the most stringent health protocols in place, the port of Las Palmas has been fundamental to the operations of European cruise ships when they resumed their activities in October 2020. In this way, the international tourist destinations served by the ports of Las Palmas, Puerto del Rosario and Arrecife were able to offer the most rigorous health and safety conditions.
This new public cruise terminal in Las Palmas, along with the facilities at the ports of Arrecife and Puerto del Rosario, will operate under an open system for general traffic. This configuration would align with that of other Spanish ports such as Barcelona, Málaga, and Valencia. The necessary investment is estimated at between 20 and 25 million euros, and the concession will be for a period of up to 40 years. The deadline for submitting bids is June 30.
