Port Tarragona is entering the final phase of construction on the Moll de Balears (Balearic Wharf) with the completion of dredging and the filling of the wharf with material dredged from the seabed. Work has now moved to the exterior of the wharf, where heavy machinery is positioning and leveling the material. Simultaneously, the installation of the quayside beam is also underway. From the sea, the vessel Ardenza continues to perform auxiliary tasks, placing the necessary materials on the south and north breakwaters of the wharf itself. The next steps in the construction of the Moll de Balears will be the installation of bollards and fenders, coinciding with the commencement of paving work on the wharf and esplanade.
The Port of Tarragona has designed this dock as a multipurpose facility, but currently, the priority is to dedicate it to cruise ship activity, and it is expected to become operational by the middle of this year. The new infrastructure will have a very long operational lifespan, and its design—if necessary—will allow for its conversion to handle other types of cargo.
This new infrastructure will increase the capacity to receive more visitors and in better conditions, with a total docking line of 700 meters, doubling the number of cruise ships that can dock simultaneously and also accommodate the largest cruise ships in the world.
