The President of the Xunta de Galicia, Alberto Núñez Feijóo, today described the rail connection of the Outer Port as an “urgent challenge.” “We are talking about a vital link, because without it the Outer Port is not a port, but a port esplanade,” he said, expressing his conviction that, just as an agreement for the construction of the railway was reached in 2018, “we will achieve it again before the environmental impact assessment is completed in June 2021.”.
During the swearing-in ceremony of Martín Fernández Prado as the new president of the Port Authority of A Coruña, Feijóo also addressed another crucial issue: the Port Authority's financial situation. "All institutions are responsible for ensuring that the Port of A Coruña does not go bankrupt," he asserted, emphasizing that, just as the Spanish Government, the Galician Regional Government (Xunta), and the City Council reached an agreement in 2004, "we have a duty to revisit those agreements and reaffirm them to prevent bankruptcy. The Xunta has always respected those agreements and will continue to do so," he concluded.
Throughout his speech, the head of the Galician government acknowledged the work of the port institutions during the pandemic and highlighted their strategic importance in the new context of reactivation.
Along these lines, he thanked the outgoing president, Enrique Losada, for his work focused on the development of the Outer Port, which is now close to reaching 11 million tons of goods loaded and unloaded.
“When ports progress, it’s because the land they’re located in progresses,” Feijóo stated, expressing his conviction that this principle will also guide the new president of the Port Authority in his daily work. To that end, he confirmed that the State-owned ports of general interest will continue to have the active collaboration of the Xunta (Galician regional government), working for the benefit of the community.
