The Port of Tarragona has completed the first phase of construction of the Balears dock, with the seabed now uniformly prepared following dredging carried out during this first month of work. The breakwater material will then be placed using barges.
In this first phase, several tasks have also been carried out, such as the assembly of the anti-turbidity barrier in the water, the removal of part of the breakwater where the new dike will go, and also the transfer of the floating dike "Mar del Aneto" to the Catalunya dock.
The second phase of the project will begin in the coming days and will consist of placing the breakwater material from the sea. This will be carried out using two barges that are already at the Port of Tarragona facilities to begin their work.
A total of 1,232,000 tons of breakwater material, sourced from the Vallcarca quarry, are expected to be placed on the seabed in the Port of Tarragona. Most of the stone used in the construction of the Balears dock will arrive by sea on two barges, each with a capacity of 1,500 tons.
A new dock that expands the possibilities of the Port of Tarragona
The dock works, with a budget of more than 27 million euros (plus VAT), officially began on April 17 with the signing of the site handover document and will be carried out within 14 months, which places the completion of the works in the middle of 2021.
This new infrastructure will substantially change the area of the Llevant dock designated for cruise ship berthing, as it will cover 4 hectares and be 460 meters long.
The total berthing line will be 700 meters, since 240 of these 460 meters will be able to accommodate ships on both sides, effectively doubling the number of cruise ships that can dock simultaneously and also allowing it to accommodate the largest cruise ships in the world.
In the future, the new infrastructure could also expand services for bulk solids and multipurpose terminals.
