MSC Cruises ' first Meraviglia-Plus class ship , MSC Grandiosa, has successfully completed its first sea trials during a three-day test in the Atlantic Ocean, conducted between August 28 and 31.
MSC Cruises' new flagship will receive its final touches at the Chantiers de l'Atlantique shipyard in Saint Nazaire, France, before being officially delivered to MSC Cruises on October 31.
With a gross tonnage of 181,000 tons, the ship has a total capacity of 6,334 passengers and will feature the latest technology and innovative maritime systems to become the most efficient and environmentally friendly ship in the MSC Cruises fleet.
MSC Grandiosa is equipped with two major technological innovations, including a selective catalytic reduction system that reduces nitrogen oxide emissions by 90% and transforms them into pure water and nitrogen. The new flagship also features an advanced wastewater treatment system that will have a near-zero impact on discharges and allow it to operate in sensitive environments such as the Baltic Sea and Alaska.
These new environmental features complement other efficient technologies implemented on MSC Grandiosa to further reduce its environmental impact, including a state-of-the-art exhaust gas cleaning, systems for preventing oil discharge from machinery spaces, a ballast water treatment system and various energy-saving improvements such as heat recovery systems and LED lighting.
The christening ceremony for MSC Grandiosa will take place on November 9 in Hamburg, before it embarks on an inaugural season in the Western Mediterranean, including inaugural calls from its home port of Genoa to Civitavecchia, Palermo, Valletta, Barcelona and Marseille.
