Expedition cruise company Mystic Cruises has announced that former French First Lady Carla Bruni will be the godmother of its first ship, the MS World Explorer, which will be christened on April 6 in Portugal.
Ms. Bruni, who married French President Nicolas Sarkozy in 2008, had a long and successful career as a supermodel before turning to music as a singer and songwriter. The Italian-French artist has several gold and platinum albums and will perform some songs from her latest album, French Touch, during the christening ceremony.
Mario Ferreira, CEO of Mystic Cruises, explained that he offered Ms. Bruni the role of godmother of the ship because she embodies the “sophistication and elegance of European design that we have incorporated into the ship's development. We always invite those who, through their work and career, represent the spirit of our ships to act as godmothers. Ms. Bruni, in her roles as a model and singer, as well as her work with charitable organizations around the world, is the perfect ambassador for our ship.”.
The MS World Explorer will be the company's first ocean-going expedition cruise ship, offering luxurious cruises and expeditions to every corner of the globe, in destinations as remote as Antarctica and the Arctic. Focused on providing unique and authentic experiences for its passengers, these ships have been designed to visit smaller ports and, unlike larger ships, dock near historic city centers, offering new experiences and ports of call in places like the Mediterranean, the Baltic, Iceland, and the Norwegian Fjords.
Equipped with state-of-the-art, environmentally sustainable technology developed by Rolls-Royce, the MS World Explorer is the first of several ships to be built by the Portuguese company for its expedition cruise division. The design is the result of several years of research and development to create the perfect balance between luxury, comfort, efficiency, and environmentally friendly operations.
In November, Mystic Cruises announced an order for two more ships for its fleet, to be delivered in 2020 and 2021. The company also opened its first office in the USA this quarter.
