Dublin Port Company hosted Cruise Europe's Brexit summit at The Gibson Hotel in Dublin. Ireland's Vice President and Minister for Foreign Affairs and Trade, Simon Coveney, opened the discussion by informing members that uncertainty continues to prevail regarding Brexit. He went on to say that this is not just a British issue, but will have repercussions for many other EU member states.
This uncertainty is proving to be a significant challenge for governments and businesses. He acknowledged the economic benefits of tourism and the maritime sector and reiterated the government's commitment to supporting these industries and the future development of cruise tourism.
The panelists agreed that uncertainty is bad for business. All organizations are spending time and resources on contingency plans instead of developing growth strategies. While cruise bookings remain strong, there are no immediate plans to change itineraries, and the main concern is the stability of the British pound and its potential economic impact.
Passenger and shop traffic continues to be monitored. However, cruise lines do not anticipate any significant impact at this time. Cruise operators have requested that ports share any information regarding local customs and immigration decisions that may be helpful in the planning process.
The panelists included executives from Carnival UK, Fred Olsen Cruise Lines, Royal Caribbean Cruises and Cruise & Maritime Voyages, as well as representatives from Irish state agencies, port authorities, shipping agents and shore excursion providers.
