Madrid, September 25, 2018: MSC Cruises, the world’s largest privately owned cruise company and leading cruise brand in Europe, South America, South Africa, and the UAE, inaugurated its Global Environmental Officers Conference. Held at its Maritime Technical Centre in London, this recurring four-day event brings together the company’s top environmental talent and aims to promote and improve environmental practices.
Environmental officers from 15 MSC Cruises ships will meet to share best practices, receive updates on local and international regulations, and familiarize themselves with the company's environmental vision and policies. The training will be delivered by senior company executives, the Environment Department, and external experts from RINA.
Pierfrancesco Vago, Executive Chairman of MSC Cruises, opened the Conference and commented: “Environmental stewardship has been a key aspect for us from day one, and we feel an enormous responsibility to conserve and protect the seas and oceans, as they are our most precious resource. While our environmental policies are clear and precise, it is also important that we have a dedicated team of professionals with the authority to ensure their effective implementation and help us achieve our environmental objectives.”
Emilio La Scala, President and CEO of MSC Cruise Management UK, added: “Given the constantly evolving environmental landscape, we want to ensure our officers are always up-to-date on our company’s environmental policies and practices. However, we consider compliance to be just a starting point and are committed to continuously raising the bar along the way, meeting or exceeding regulations. Our company’s success depends on the training of our officers, and as our growth is very rapid, we are also looking to attract more top talent in this sector.”
During the Conference, the officers will focus their attention on, among other topics, MARPOL's environmental requirements, as well as the national and local requirements of specific geographic areas. In addition, the team will deepen their knowledge of wastewater treatment, emissions reduction, ballast water management, antifouling systems, and solid waste management.
The Global Environmental Officers Conference is part of a larger program designed to progressively increase the importance of environmental considerations in all company practices. In addition to this conference, the company organizes a series of environmental management training sessions for deck and engine room officers at its state-of-the-art training center in Sorrento, Italy.
