(WASHINGTON, DC, December 18, 2017) – The Cruise Lines International Association (CLIA), the world’s largest cruise industry association, has released its 2018 State of the Cruise Industry . The publication offers an in-depth look at the cruise industry’s trajectory, global economic impact, and trends affecting cruise travel in 2018.

Current data shows that the number of cruise trips is steadily increasing, with an estimated 27.2 million passengers set sail in 2018. In 2017, an estimated 25.8 million passengers traveled on cruises, compared to 24.7 million confirmed passengers in 2016—a 20.5 percent increase over the five years from 2011 to 2016. To meet current demand, more ships are expected to set sail in 2018. CLIA reports that cruise lines are scheduled to launch 27 new ocean-going, river-cruising, and specialty vessels next year
“There is no doubt that the cruise industry is in a period of growth, gaining consumer interest and creating a positive impact on the global economy,” said Cindy D’Aoust, president and CEO of CLIA. “The State of the Cruise Industry 2018 is a way to keep our finger on the pulse of the industry and identify new trends and data that will impact cruise travel in the future.”
CLIA also reports on the economic impact of the cruise industry in 2016. Cruise industry spending generated $126 billion in total output worldwide, employing more than one million full-time workers who earned around $41 billion, an increase over previous years.
As part of the State of the Cruise Industry 2018 report , CLIA has forecasted nine major cruise travel trends for the coming year.
Cruise Travel for Every Budget – The forthcoming 2018 Cruise Travel Report reveals that people from nearly every income level are cruising. In fact, one-third (33%) of surveyed cruisers who have taken a cruise in the past three years have a household income of less than $80,000. While the data shows that affluent consumers are more likely to cruise than other types of vacations, the report indicates that people from nearly every income bracket enjoy cruise vacations.
- Transformational Cruise Travel – The next evolution of experiential travel allows travelers to take things a step further and seek out “transformational” experiences. From cultural immersion and volunteering to extreme adventures, those returning from a cruise will experience a shift in perspective and a sense of accomplishment. Some upcoming cruise itineraries include opportunities to sample local cuisine, take guided tours of small towns, and even visit private homes. Thrill-seekers can fill their bucket lists with activities like swimming with sharks in South Africa, riding a Harley Davidson in Alaska, or mingling with penguins in the Arctic.
- Sustainability at sea – Next year will see an even greater focus on sustainable tourism. Travelers will be able to participate in sustainable practices, both on board and on land, related to recycling and waste management, as well as in grassroots volunteer initiatives that aim to create a positive environmental impact in destinations around the world.
- Millennials are choosing the river – River cruises and small cruise ships continue to gain popularity among travelers, especially Millennials. With new itineraries, destination experiences that go far beyond walking or coach tours, and endless opportunities for the perfect Instagram moment, the younger generation is opting for river cruises.
- Multigenerational Cruises – The popularity of multigenerational cruises is expected to increase, as already predicted in Cruise Industry Outlook published in April 2017. But there's a twist: multigenerational trips, where grandparents travel with their grandchildren without their parents, are predicted to become very popular starting in 2018.
- Travelers from warm to cold destinations – Colder climate destinations, including the Baltic States, Canada, Alaska, and Antarctica, are expected to see increased popularity in the coming year. With a variety of unique excursions, from penguin watching to ice fishing, these stunning winter destinations appeal to both first-time and returning cruise travelers.
- Healthy Doses – Now more than ever, travelers are seeking healthy and wellness trips, and the cruise industry is responding with mind-body services and experiences. Cruise passengers can participate in onboard wellness seminars led by popular health experts, personalized fitness programs, and stress management and spa services. There are even cruises with itineraries dedicated to weight management and healthy living, including Weight Watchers and menus for a wide variety of dietary needs, from diabetics to vegetarians.
- Smart Technology Onboard – Next year will also see an increase in onboard technologies for travelers. For example, several cruise lines are introducing wearable technology to provide passengers with a personalized and seamless experience while onboard. From keychains and wristbands to necklaces, wearable technology on cruise ships interacts with the ship's sensors to perform all sorts of actions, from turning on lights when a passenger approaches their cabin to acting as a security agent.
- Demand for Travel Agents – Travel agents continue to experience steady demand from consumers for vacation planning and execution. Some of the key factors behind the popularity of travel agencies include ease of planning, expertise, and affordability.
