Fincantieri announced the firm order for two ships for Viking, which will be its seventh and eighth units, in addition to the confirmation of options for the ninth and tenth units.
Viking is a company with a long history in river cruises. It launched its first ocean-going ship in 2015 and has been building sister ships ever since. The Viking Star, its first vessel, carried 930 passengers and displaced 47,800 gross tons. It was followed by the Viking Sea in 2016, and the Viking Sky and Viking Sun in 2017. The Viking Orion is currently under construction and is scheduled to be launched in July 2018, with the sixth ship expected in March 2019. New orders are expected in 2021, 2022 (two ships), and 2023.
