The Island Council of La Gomera announced that it is extending the cruise ship revitalization campaign, promoted by the Department of Commerce, due to the positive outlook in April. In addition to stimulating the commercial and artisanal sector in the ports of San Sebastián de La Gomera and Valle Gran Rey, it offers a "highly positive experience" to the more than 80,000 cruise passengers who visited the island last year.
According to the Island Councillor for Industry and Commerce, “this tourism is an opportunity for La Gomera as it allows the parallel development of other sectors, such as commerce, crafts or gastronomy, and has enormous growth potential, as reflected in the future prospects both in San Sebastián and foreseeably in Valle Gran Rey.”.
In this regard, the Port Authority of Santa Cruz de Tenerife estimates that more than 84,000 cruise tourists will arrive in 2016 at the port of San Sebastián de La Gomera, where seventy-two ships have already confirmed their presence.
However, Coello assures that "in order to take advantage of this segment we must adapt the service offer to the needs of cruise tourists," so a series of measures are planned to be implemented soon in this regard, which include, in addition to a better artisan offer, the inclusion of agri-food products produced in La Gomera and new incentives for the commercial and restaurant sector.
Among the objectives set for the next season is to enrich urban spaces and boost tourist traffic through the main commercial areas of San Sebastián and Valle Gran Rey, also providing artisans and artists with a point for the exhibition and sale of their products in the Open Commercial Zones.
So far, more than 30,000 cruise ship tourists have benefited from this campaign organized by the Cabildo of La Gomera, in collaboration with the municipalities, and in which action has been taken on a total of twenty cruise ships, since mid-October.
