CLIA's inaugural Summit at Sea brings together the cruise industry for a unique experience aboard the MSC Preziosa

CLIA's executive partners and member cruise lines have engaged in productive discussions on issues related to port operations, health, destination development, safety and security.

The inaugural Summit at Sea, the Cruise Lines International Association's (CLIA) new platform designed to engage industry peers and cruise line representatives, was met with great enthusiasm by industry delegates. Over four days (January 8-11), 120 participants representing 57 CLIA Executive Partners and 17 cruise lines took part in a training program that included lectures and workshops on current industry topics such as port operations, health, destination development, safety, and security.

Optimism surrounding the cruise industry continues to grow, with most delegates anticipating that by 2030, 14 million passengers could embark on a cruise in Europe each year. This would represent a 3.5% penetration rate among the European population and a significant opportunity for both Europe and the Mediterranean.

The MSC Preziosa, MSC Cruises' newest ship, was chosen as the venue for the Summit at Sea, sailing from Barcelona to Civitavecchia. During the voyage, delegates enjoyed a networking with dinners, receptions, shore excursions, and visits to cruise terminals in the ports of call. CLIA Diamond members also had the opportunity to attend an exclusive dinner.

“This event is part of the enhancements to CLIA’s Executive Partner program,” said Pierfrancesco Vago, Executive Chairman of MSC Cruises and Chairman of CLIA Europe, on the opening day before the ship set sail from Barcelona. “With Summit at Sea, we have created a fantastic platform for our industry partners. We intend to repeat this experience next year on another ship, to continue understanding the needs and expectations of all our members.”.

“We are incredibly grateful for the hospitality extended by the MSC teams, both onshore and onboard, and for the time given to us by the cruise line executives,” said Bo Larsen, CLIA Vice President of Strategic Partnerships. “Summit at Sea has been very well received, demonstrating the unique benefits of CLIA membership. We will continue to develop and create new opportunities for our member community so that we, as an industry, can continue to grow.”.
