The contract for the expansion of the Cartagena Port cruise terminal has been signed

The 144-meter extension of the berth will allow for the simultaneous berthing of two cruise ships up to 300 meters in length.
The Port of Cartagena has experienced a significant increase in the number of cruise ship and passenger calls at the Alfonso XII Wharf Terminal in recent years. Double and triple calls are becoming increasingly common: in 2015 there were six triple calls and 14 double calls, which, together with the one scheduled for December 5th, will bring the total to 15. Furthermore, the cruise industry is trending towards building increasingly larger and longer ships.
These circumstances led the Port of Cartagena to propose a new expansion of the Cruise Terminal, which currently has a berth length of 522 meters, allowing for the simultaneous berthing of two 250-meter cruise ships. This expansion will extend the existing pier by 144 meters. Eastbound, allowing for simultaneous calls by two 300-meter-long cruise ships.
To carry out this project, three concrete caissons, each 40 meters long, 12 meters wide, and 12.7 meters high, will be manufactured in Escombreras. A fourth caisson, currently located at the end of the dock to be extended, will be reused by refloating and rotating it before being redeployed.
This morning, the President of the Port Authority and the representative of the construction company, a joint venture formed by Dragados and Drace, signed the contract for this project, which has a 14-month execution period. The total contract amount, including VAT, was €4,621,355.54.
Antonio Sevilla highlighted during the event the positive results of this year's cruise season, in which more than 145,000 passengers have arrived so far, and another 3,900 tourists are expected on the three cruises on December 5 and 13.
