The commissioning of the Outer Port has driven this remarkable increase
The Port of A Coruña consolidated its leading position among Galician ports in terms of cargo volume in October. In the figures for the first ten months of the year, the total volume of goods handled increased by 19.52% compared to the same period last year. Between January and October, 11.8 million tons of cargo passed through the Port of A Coruña, compared to 9.9 million tons during the same period last year.
With these results, the Port of A Coruña remains among the fastest-growing ports in the Spanish port system, a positive trend driven primarily by bulk cargo. Specifically, liquid bulk cargo leads the increase, rising 28% to 6.6 million tons, compared to 5.1 million tons handled between January and October 2014. Crude oil traffic stands out in this report, with an increase of over 36%.
The balance for solid bulk cargo also shows very positive results, with a 17% increase to 4.1 million tons. Coal and agri-food products are leading the growth. Specifically, coal increased by 40% and now exceeds 1.2 million tons. In the agri-food sector, increases were seen in flour, wheat, barley, corn, animal feed, and forage. In both sectors, the influence of the consolidation of regular traffic at the Outer Port is evident, where more than 730,000 tons of goods have been handled so far this year. The main operators, who have already relocated to Punta Langosteira and have industrial facilities within the port area, primarily handle these bulk cargoes, whose traffic will continue to increase as these companies' expansion plans progress.
This momentum, generated since February when the first vessels began operating, has positioned the Outer Port for takeoff and consolidation. Its main dock is now the second largest in the port in terms of cargo volume, after the Centenario Dock (excluding tankers, which are exclusively for this purpose). Thanks to the ample space offered by Punta Langosteira, which has allowed operators to construct large warehouses and undertake expansions, storage capacity has multiplied in the Outer Port. Currently, Terminales Marítimos de Galicia, Pérez Torres, and Galigrain already have more solid bulk storage capacity in Punta Langosteira than in the inner port.
