The berthing line at Botafoc will be extended and safety will be increased
This week, work began on extending the southern pier at the Botafoc docks in the port of Ibiza, with the aim of improving capacity for cruise ship traffic and berthing operations. The chosen solution is the construction of three dolphins, which will extend the berthing length to 328 and 375 meters on either side of the pier. This will allow for the simultaneous berthing of two ships up to 335 and 390 meters in length.
The extension of the docks will also improve port operations, since currently large cruise ships coincide with the tankers unloading fuel along the Botafoc dock, and the current berths have a limited capacity to accommodate large cruise ships when weather conditions are adverse.
The project includes the construction of a Duke of Alba breakwater plus two larger, reinforced concrete double breakwaters, supported by two-meter diameter piles. This structural design will optimize the quantities of concrete and steel used, resulting in reduced costs and construction time. From an environmental sustainability perspective, it is also a highly suitable solution as it facilitates water renewal in the port.
The works have been awarded for 3.8 million euros to the joint venture Copcisa-Olives and have an execution period of five months, when the tender budget was 6.5 million.
