THE PROJECT WILL EXTEND THE PIER BY 144 METERS ON ITS EAST SIDE, CREATING A TOTAL 667-METER BEACHFRONT, ENOUGH TO ACCOMMODATE TWO 300-METER CRUISE SHIPS.
The increase in cruise ship traffic experienced in the Mediterranean in recent years is reflected in the boom in this activity at the Port of Cartagena. Each year, more cruise ships call at the port, and more passengers disembark at the Cruise Terminal located on the Alfonso XII Wharf.
This terminal currently has a berth length of 522 meters, allowing for the simultaneous arrival of two cruise ships of approximately 250 meters in length. However, triple and even quadruple calls are becoming increasingly common, requiring at least one of the cruise ships to dock at the Santa Lucía Wharf or the La Curra Wharf, after obtaining permission from the Spanish Navy.
To avoid this situation as much as possible, the Board of Directors of the Cartagena Port Authority approved at its meeting on the 24th the tendering process for the works to extend the cruise ship pier on its eastern side by approximately 144 meters, increasing the berthing area to 667 meters. This project will be carried out through the construction of three concrete caissons and the reuse of a fourth, existing caisson.
The works to be put out to tender have a budget of €5,492,459.64, including VAT, and a completion timeframe of 16 months.
