The El Batel Auditorium of Cartagena, hosted the twelfth edition of the Cruise Excellence Awards, attended by more than 350 guests.

The ceremony brought together, as previously, the main executives of cruise lines, cruise operators, ship agents, ports and destinations, travel agents, press, service providers and professionals.

In addition, a special presentation was made, the Andrés Mira Domenech Award, in memory of the founder of CruisesNews Media Group, an emotional award that the organization grants when it considers that there are exceptional merits. This fell to Emiliano González, President of MSC Cruises Spain, who Virginia López General Director of CNMG described as one of her main supports in these difficult years.

The gala featured a spectacular performance by Elena del Aire and Alberto Soro, who captivated the audience with their acrobatics of Pole Dancing and Cyr Wheel. The entertainment was directed and presented by the humourist and showman Mr. Corrales. This year the organization presented the new trophies, in the form of customized sculptures made of COR-TEN steel.

The Cruise Excellence Awards are the result of a macro survey conducted amongst national cruise passengers which gives a special value to the results.

The choice of the city is due, among other considerations, to the consolidation of the Port of Cartagena as one of the Spanish destinations that have experienced the greatest growth in recent years. During 2018 it received more than 230,000 passengers in 148 cruises, which placed it as the eighth Spanish port for this type of traffic. In 2019, 165 cruise calls are planned, bringing 240,000 passengers. This also means that the port will break free of its previous seasonality since it will be receiving boats every month of the year.

Cartagena
Cartagena is one of the Spanish destinations that have seen rapid growth in recent years.

In 2016, the city debuted as a cruise embarkation port, and in 2017 the new access to the expanded cruise terminal was inaugurated. In 2018 Cartagena received 140 calls with more than 200,000 passengers and for 2019 it will have 165 calls with more than 240,000 passengers. These positive figures of calls and passengers scheduled for 2020 will maintain this growth trend.

Cartagena offers its visitors a variety of tourist options: Notably, Roman Cartagena, with its amphitheatre and the Roman forum among other archaeological sites. Then, there is Military Cartagena, with castles, fortresses and military buildings that served to defend the city and the entire coast of the region, and Modernist Cartagena: thanks to mining during the last century, several modernist buildings were built throughout the city.

It also offers access to a wide range of tourism attractions in the region of Murcia, such as the city of Murcia, with its Cathedral, palaces and churches in the Baroque style; La Manga del Mar Menor, a unique therapeutic place for the healing properties attributed to its beneficial mud; Mina Agrupa Vicente, just 20km from the port, is one of the largest mines open to the public in Europe with galleries of more than 2,300 square metres at a depth of 80 metres, where it is also possible to enjoy a flamenco show. Another popular attraction is an exhibition of the Spanish horse, where it is possible to see real breeding horses, study their morphology, observe the foals from the breeding programme, witness the handling of cattle and stallions, as well as enjoying a flamenco show and a taste of local tapas and wine; among others.

The location also offers an excellent variety in gastronomic options, which can be savoured during a tapas route, visiting the local market or preparing typical Spanish dishes; or visit the Jumilla area, where this wine with “Designation of Origin” is located, visit its vineyards and wineries as well as the recently inaugurated Jumilla Wine Museum, as well as enjoying “Experience 43”, through a visit to the factory and local liquor museum of Cartagena, Licor 43.
