AmaWaterways is upping the ante on immersive travel with the launch of a new six-day Machu Picchu experience, combining one of the world's most iconic destinations with exceptional hotels, legendary train journeys, private tours, and authentic cultural experiences.
The offer will be available as a post-cruise extension on the Magic of Colombia, with select 2027 departures beginning in April. From 2028 onward, it will be offered on all departures of this itinerary that include a post-cruise extension.
After disembarking in Cartagena de Indias, Colombia, passengers will fly to Lima, Peru, with intercity flights included in the land experience. Upon arrival, they will be escorted to their hotel before beginning to explore the vibrant Peruvian capital. The journey will continue to Cusco and the Sacred Valley, culminating in a private guided tour of Machu Picchu.
“Machu Picchu is one of the world’s most iconic landmarks. We are thrilled to add this thoughtfully curated experience to our offering, as it reflects how AmaWaterways is evolving its luxury river cruise proposition,” said Catherine Powell, CEO of AmaWaterways. “We have always believed that the best and most memorable experiences are those that deeply connect our guests with the places they visit. With our inaugural voyage to Peru, we have brought together exceptional hotels, fine dining, and service in one unforgettable destination.”.
From the Andes to Machu Picchu
The trip combines Peru's coastal capital with the history and landscapes of the Andes. In Lima, passengers will explore the vibrant districts of Miraflores and Barranco with a local guide before flying to Cusco, where historic architecture, the Inca legacy, and unique Peruvian cuisine will serve as an introduction to the days to come.
One of the highlights of the experience will be the journey to Machu Picchu aboard the legendary Hiram Bingham, A Belmond Train, or the first-class Inca Rail train. Accompanied by a local guide, passengers will discover the ancient Inca citadel, nestled in a spectacular mountain setting.
Other highlights include the Sacred Valley and Ollantaytambo, the ancient salt mines of Maras, the unique agricultural terraces of Moray, the historic center of Cusco, the ancient Inca temple of Coricancha, and the hilltop fortress of Sacsayhuaman.
Throughout the journey, travelers will be able to discover Peru through its gastronomy, architecture, art and local traditions, as well as enjoy the Andean landscapes and explore the historic streets of Cusco at their own pace.
“We want to offer our passengers even more opportunities to enjoy extraordinary experiences like this, from beginning to end,” Powell said. “Machu Picchu is an iconic destination, but everything surrounding it is also fascinating: how you get there, where you stay, what you discover, who you meet, and ultimately, how the experience makes you feel.”.
The extension to Machu Picchu reflects AmaWaterways' continued commitment to immersive travel, offering new opportunities to explore destinations through carefully curated experiences and a more flexible approach, with partially guided tours.
Passengers can choose between two hotel options, designed to complement their tour of Peru. The Boutique option includes stays at The Westin Lima Hotel & Convention Center, Tambo del Inka, A Luxury Collection Resort & Spa, and Palacio del Inka, A Luxury Collection Hotel.
For its part, the Iconic option offers accommodation at Miraflores Park, A Belmond Hotel, in Lima, and Monasterio, A Belmond Hotel, in Cusco.
Both proposals combine unique accommodations with memorable gastronomic experiences and opportunities to discover the history, culture and landscapes of Peru.
