The Port of Tarragona has welcomed the maiden call of the Viking Yi Dun, the first ship from Viking Ocean Cruises designed to operate Mediterranean itineraries aimed exclusively at the Chinese market. The ship’s arrival marks an important step in the cruise line’s strategy to bring this destination to one of the source markets with the greatest growth potential in the cruise industry.
The port call was accompanied by an official ceremony attended by the president of the Tarragona Port Authority, Santiago J. Castellà; the mayor of Tarragona, Rubén Viñuales; the Chinese consul general in Barcelona, Meng Yuhong; representatives of local governments; and executives from Viking Ocean Cruises.
The choice of Tarragona as the port for this first Mediterranean stopover reinforces the company’s commitment to the destination and consolidates the Catalan city’s position within the premium cruise segment. For the 2026 season, Viking Ocean Cruises has scheduled 17 port calls in Tarragona, with an expected 34,800 passengers, compared to the three port calls and approximately 5,000 passengers recorded in 2025.
The president of the Port of Tarragona, Santiago J. Castellà, emphasized that this port of call “represents a milestone that goes beyond the arrival of a new cruise ship,” as it strengthens the port’s international standing and demonstrates the confidence Viking has in Tarragona for developing future projects.
For her part, Genoveva Climent, Director of Business Development at the Port of Tarragona, noted that both organizations are working to explore long-term collaboration opportunities to further develop the shipping company’s presence at the port, with a shared vision based on quality, sustainability, and integration between the port and the city.
To mark this first port of call, the passengers of the Viking Yi Dun were welcomed with a castells performance by the Colla Vella dels Xiquets de Valls, which built several castells next to the Balears pier. The performance gave visitors their first taste of Catalan culture, in line with the port’s strategy to promote authentic experiences linked to the region’s heritage, cuisine, and identity.
This philosophy aligns with Viking's value proposition—a cruise line specializing in cultural and luxury cruises that seeks to offer its passengers a deeper connection with the destinations they visit.
The arrival of the Viking Yi Dun also highlights the growth of the premium segment in Tarragona. Of the 81 scheduled port calls for the 2026 season, 45 will be high-end cruises, representing a 40.6% increase over the previous year.
Furthermore, Viking’s commitment to the destination goes beyond conventional port calls. Six of its port calls will include one night in port and a two-day stay, while four will include two nights and three days in Tarragona, giving passengers more time to explore the Costa Daurada and generating a greater economic impact on the destination.
With this strategy, Tarragona continues to establish itself as one of the Mediterranean’s leading boutique ports for the premium segment, reinforcing a growth model based on the quality of the experience and the integration of cruise operations with the local area.
