TDoS designs the first riverboat inspired by a luxury yacht for Transcend Cruises

The design firm Tillberg Design of Sweden has unveiled its latest project for Transcend Cruises: an innovative 135-meter-long riverboat inspired by the design of large yachts, conceived to redefine the traditional concept of river cruising and create a new category within the premium segment.

This is the first riverboat specifically built with a yacht-inspired deck layout, developed to meet the growing demand for high-end group travel, corporate meetings, events, and private charters. The project was designed from the ground up in close collaboration with Transcend Cruises, with the goal of offering a highly flexible and adaptable product without compromising on design or comfort.

“It wasn’t just about creating attractive interiors, but about helping to define an entirely new product category,” explains Anna Silvesjö, CEO of Viken Group.

With a capacity of 120 guests, the new ship will offer one of the best crew-to-guest ratios in the river cruise industry, with 54 crew members, ensuring a highly personalized service.

The ship will feature 60 spacious cabins, located primarily on two decks. Its modular design will allow cabins to be connected in pairs to create up to 30 two-room suites, easily adapting to the needs of each group or event.

This versatility makes the boat an ideal venue for incentive trips, corporate meetings, themed cruises, private groups, and exclusive programs.

One of the most innovative spaces will be the Forum, a double-height amphitheater that will serve as the ship’s social hub. This multifunctional space will be able to host presentations, conferences, performances, celebrations, destination briefings, or informal gatherings, easily adapting to different formats thanks to the integration of architecture, technology, and operations.

The leisure offerings are rounded out by a wide variety of common areas, including a main lounge, a stern lounge, a café-bar, a library, several private lounges, an exclusive Chef’s Table, a wine cellar, and a grill restaurant.

The rooftop reinforces the concept of an outdoor lifestyle with a panoramic lounge, a grill area, an outdoor movie theater, a walking path, and a space dedicated to yoga.

Well-being also takes center stage, thanks to a full-service spa, a fitness studio, a sauna with river views, and dedicated areas for relaxation and exercise.

Far from the traditional aesthetic of cruise ships, TDoS has embraced an identity inspired by the contemporary design of luxury yachts and high-end boutique hotels. The selection of materials combines natural woods, textured stone, soft fabrics, warm metals, and carefully layered finishes to create an elegant, relaxed, and timeless atmosphere.

In addition to their aesthetic appeal, all materials have been selected for their strength, ease of maintenance, and durability, ensuring excellent performance during the ship’s intense operational activity. Abundant natural light also plays an essential role in the design. The large windows allow the river landscape to be seamlessly integrated into the interiors, making the river itself part of the travel experience.

According to Anna Silvesjö, the goal of the project was for passengers not to feel like they were on a boat. “We wanted to create a welcoming, spacious environment that felt connected to the landscape. Rather than the feeling of being on a boat, we wanted guests to feel as though they were in a contemporary boutique hotel or on a private yacht that just happens to be sailing along Europe’s rivers,” she explains.

To achieve this, the firm has worked with expansive visual perspectives, carefully designed lighting, seamless transitions between spaces, and a close connection between the interior and the outdoor environment. The residential feel of the interiors promotes relaxation, while the integrated technology allows each space to be discreetly adapted to different events and charter programs.

The project also presented a significant design challenge for TDoS. Unlike the large ocean-going cruise ships and yachts the firm typically works on, the limited dimensions of a riverboat required making the most of every available square meter.

The result is a vessel that combines the sophistication of a superyacht with the functionality of a flexible platform for events and groups, setting a new course in the luxury river cruise segment and reinforcing Transcend Cruises’ commitment to offering fully personalized experiences.
