We embarked on the special “Culinary Luminaries” cruise through the Mediterranean, where sea artists and the most exquisite haute cuisine come together once a year to delight their most gourmet clients.

In an ocean where luxury is measured in meters of length, Oceania Cruises has chosen a different path: the path of flavor. It doesn't strive to be the biggest or the loudest, but the most delicious. Its motto, "The Finest Cuisine at Sea," is not just an advertising slogan, but a declaration of principles. On every voyage, the company demonstrates that sailing can also be a gastronomic experience of the highest order. Gastronomy is not a service; it's a performing art. Each restaurant tells a story, a culinary accent, a journey within a journey.
Jacques, a living tribute to the legendary French chef Jacques Pépin, evokes Parisian bistros where foie gras and butter become pure poetry. Toscana distills the essence of Italy with fresh pasta, extra virgin olive oils, and the aromas of Tuscany that fill the dining room. Polo Grill embodies the classic steakhouse , where premium cuts are served with the precision of a ritual.

Red Ginger explores Asian exoticism with the meticulous balance of its curries, gingers, and fermented soy sauces, while La Reserve by Wine Spectator offers the perfect experience for wine lovers, pairing the finest vintages with exclusively designed menus. Furthermore, for those curious about the culinary arts, the Culinary Center , its hands-on cooking school, allows you to don an apron and learn techniques from award-winning chefs.
The Guardians of Flavor:
Behind this symphony of flavors are two masters of French cuisine: Alexis Quaretti and Eric Barale, both members of the prestigious Maîtres Cuisiniers de France association, an honor reserved for the world's most distinguished chefs. They are joined by the iconic figure of Jacques Pépin, chef, mentor, and creative soul of the shipping company. His legacy is tangible in every dish, in every patiently reduced sauce, in every gesture of respect for the ingredients.
Jacques Pépin proudly showcases what he has created for Oceania, which he feels is very much his own, and defines his cuisine not only as a luxury but as a way of traveling, which is ultimately the spirit that permeates the company: discovering the world through flavor.

Because when a French chef reduces a sauce as the sun sets over the Mediterranean, when a sommelier uncorks a bottle of Bordeaux off the French coast, when a guest savors freshly made pasta in Tuscany, then the sea ceases to be a horizon and becomes a table. Perhaps not everyone appreciates this, or pauses long enough to appreciate it, or simply seeks other things on their trip, but if you do, you're on the right cruise.
Culinary Luminaries Cruise
Oceania boasts a loyal customer base who, voyage after voyage, discover the best of each itinerary combined with the art of fine dining. One of the most anticipated cruises is the Culinary Luminaries, an annual voyage where Oceania's chefs share the stage, secrets, and passion for gastronomy, along with several guest chefs from different countries and specialties, such as Loic Lobet, Jean-Philippe Gheysens, and Jean-Christophe Rasse. It's a double or triple somersault, to use an analogy.

During the cruise, you not only enjoy live culinary demonstrations by the chefs, but they also share the recipes in writing, making you feel truly privileged on board while tasting them and a Master Chef upon your return home. Each day offers a unique onboard experience, some more exclusive and requiring reservations, while others are open to everyone. As the voyage winds along the French coast, you can choose gastronomic excursions with wine tastings at small wineries and return on board for dinner, if you wish, at the Chef's Market Dinner, the French experience at La Terrace, which features seasonal local dishes. Without resorting to clichés, dining on those endless platters of mussels, snails, duck, and cheese—lots of cheese (to give just a few examples)—buffet-style, accompanied by French wines, outdoors with the breeze and the sound of the sea, might seem simple, but it's one of those luxuries I look for on a cruise. This same experience was repeated "Greek-style."
In addition to the specialty restaurants, the culinary and experiential offerings are complemented by wine-paired dinners at Aquamar Kitchen, a dinner for up to 24 guests with prior reservation, featuring a renowned chef, where French dining is taken to another level. For the most discerning palates.
Throughout the entire journey, you'll need to work hard to make sure your stomach can handle everything; from the Culinary Luminaries Gala Dinner to various wine tastings, including organic ones. Special mention must be made of the legendary "Gala Brunch," served from morning until night in the Grand Dining Room. And yes, "gala" means caviar, lobster, and every delicacy you can imagine.

This year, the cruise took us through the Mediterranean from Barcelona to Istanbul, but the world is vast and gastronomy is diverse, so the Culinary Luminaries from Belfast to Lisbon has already been announced for 2026, sailing from September 15th to 25th aboard the Oceania Marina. Chefs Quaretti and Barale will be honored hosts, accompanying guests on culinary demonstrations, onboard tastings, and visits to historic wineries such as the Château Royal de Cognac.
But we cannot overlook the other factors that have consistently placed Oceania at such a high level, or that have driven it to even further elevate its status, moving beyond being merely a premium cruise line—the so-called Upper Premium —to establish itself as a true luxury cruise line, embodying the luxuries that define it. Oceania Cruises belongs to Norwegian Cruise Holding, along with Regent Seven Seas and Norwegian Cruise Line, and in Spain, it is primarily marketed by Un Mundo de Cruceros.

The level of service on their ships is exceptional, personalized, and attentive. Even when fully loaded with up to 1,200 passengers, you never feel crowded; there's ample space and attentive service. The ships are tastefully decorated with quality and understated elegance. We could mention the brands featured in the decor and tableware, but we'll save that for another article, as it truly warrants its own discussion. I'll just briefly mention a few: Versace, Ralph Lauren Home, and Lalique tableware and porcelain.
This journey aboard the Vista, which was inaugurated in 2023, has allowed us to appreciate that sense of space, service, taste for the delicate and gastronomy as the backbone of the experience.
