Figen Ayan, a renowned expert in sustainable maritime tourism, is stepping down as Port Director of Galataport Istanbul to embark on a new professional chapter by founding her own consulting firm, Ayan Consulting. After more than a decade as Port Director of Galataport Istanbul, Ayan leaves behind a legacy of significant innovations and achievements in the port and tourism sectors.
Ayan participated in the International Cruise Summit 2024, officially with his new consulting firm, operational since this November, to introduce it to the entire industry.
During his 11 years at the helm of Galataport, Ayan spearheaded the creation of a world-class cruise terminal, valued at $1.7 billion, overseeing the project from conception to operation. This complex includes the first underground terminal building equipped with an innovative hatch system to create temporary customs and security zones when ships are docked, revolutionizing port efficiency. Under his leadership, Istanbul solidified its position as a key cruise destination in the Mediterranean, both as a port of call and a homeport, attracting more than 40 cruise lines.
As former president of MedCruise and current honorary president, Ayan has a strong international network in the cruise industry, built over three decades of experience. She is also recognized by the European Commission as an expert in maritime and sustainable tourism, a position that allows her to advise on projects that balance economic development, environmental sustainability, and social responsibility. This approach, which she describes as “holistic sustainability,” will be central to the services offered by her new consultancy, Ayan Consulting.
“This new stage allows me to share the knowledge and experience acquired throughout my career with emerging markets and destinations, helping them to face the unique challenges of the industry,” Ayan said.
Ayan Consulting will offer specialized services in port development, destination management, and philanthropic strategies, based on its extensive strategic and operational experience, to provide tangible solutions tailored to the specific needs of each client.
