Spain is emerging as a global cruise tourism powerhouse , with sustainability being one of its most urgent challenges
The cruise sector in Spain generated an economic impact of €9.5 billion last year, according to data from Ocean Capital Partners (OCP). This economic performance is complemented by the prospect of over €4.5 billion in investment in the Spanish port network, driven by the energy transition.
Cruise tourism in Spain has experienced exceptional growth, exceeding expectations with a record number of arrivals. In 2023, more than 12 million passengers arrived at Spanish ports on cruise ships, consolidating Spain's position as the second most popular cruise destination in Europe, after Italy.
Barcelona and the Balearic Islands stand out as the leading ports in terms of cruise passenger volume, although the Port of Cadiz registered a large increase of 72.4%, along with the Canary Islands ports.
Continued growth in cruise demand is anticipated in the coming years, with the introduction of new ships, many featuring more sustainable technologies. Fourteen new vessels are expected to be delivered this year, six of which will be powered by liquefied natural gas (LNG).
Despite its economic success, the cruise industry faces significant sustainability challenges. Brussels is demanding a 40% reduction in CO2 emissions by 2030 and their complete elimination by 2050.
Shipping companies are renewing their fleets and developing more environmentally friendly ships, but the transition to cleaner technologies requires additional investment.
