Carnival's goals to reduce greenhouse gas emissions

Carnival Corporation is working toward ambitious goals to reduce greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions by 2024, aiming for an 18% reduction in GHG intensity compared to 2019. This is closer to the original 20% target set for 2030.

It is projected that by the end of the year, the reduction will be 42% from the 2008 baseline, thus exceeding the International Maritime Organization's carbon intensity reduction timetable for 2030.

The company recognizes the importance of reducing fuel consumption to decrease greenhouse gas emissions. It has implemented various energy and fuel-saving innovations, including fleet modernization with efficient technologies and optimization of ship hull design.

In addition, more than 60% of Carnival ships are equipped to shut off their engines and connect to local power grids while docked, reducing emissions in port.

Despite the lack of widely available zero-emission fuels, Carnival has been exploring lower-emission alternatives and new technologies to power its ships. This includes using liquefied natural gas (LNG) on nine of its ships and advanced air quality systems to reduce atmospheric emissions.

In addition, Carnival Corporation is testing advanced fuel technologies, such as lithium-ion battery storage systems and fuel cells powered by methanol-derived hydrogen, as well as experimenting with biofuels as substitutes for fossil fuels.
