Hurtigruten guarantees Northern Lights sightings on its Nordic cruises

the Norwegian shipping company Hurtigruten offers the "Complete Original Journey" with stops in 34 ports, sailing through more than 100 fjords and 1000 mountains or crossing the Arctic Circle, while discovering coastal landscapes accompanied by the phenomenon of the Northern Lights.

Hurtigruten Northern Lights

The original route begins in Bergen, with its historic Bryggen district, a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Other highlights of the autumn tour include sailing along the Hjørundfjord, surrounded by the Sunnmøre Alps; Molde, the "City of Roses"; Trondheim; the Lofoten Islands; Tromsø, the Arctic capital; and Kirkenes.

Hurtigruten assures that in the autumn season, the Norwegian coasts also offer their completely white landscapes, the phenomenon of the Northern Lights at nightfall.

Sunspot sightings, a key factor in predicting the Northern Lights, have increased significantly since the end of 2022, exceeding forecasts and expanding the areas from which this natural phenomenon can be witnessed.

Mark Miesch, a research scientist at the University of Colorado – Boulder and the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA), notes that if this trend continues, the next 18 months will bring the most intense Northern Lights activity in the last two decades.

The Northern Lights, a highlight in the Northern Hemisphere between October and March, illuminate the sky with a stunning array of colors. Hurtigruten assures that passengers aboard its ships, far from light pollution, will be able to enjoy this phenomenon.

In addition, Hurtigruten is committed to guaranteeing Northern Lights viewing with its distinctive Northern Lights Promise. If weather conditions prevent viewing on the entire Classic Route, the company offers guests a free trip from Bergen to Kirkenes or from Kirkenes to Bergen during the next Northern Lights season, from October 1 to March 31.

Furthermore, this winter trip is not limited to observing the northern lights, as travelers can combine sailing with a wide variety of activities including snowmobile safaris, snowshoeing excursions, a visit to one of the largest aquariums in northern Europe, or dog sledding adventures pulled by huskies, among others.

And for those interested in immersing themselves in Norwegian culture and history, lectures are offered on board the trip to learn more about the region.
