Meyer Werft has delivered Disney Cruise Line's first new ship in 10 years, the LNG-powered Disney Wish. The vessel arrived in Bremerhaven, Germany, at approximately 5 a.m. on June 9, from Eemshaven, in the Netherlands, where it underwent final outfitting.
During a ceremony held in Bremerhaven, Disney Cruise Line President Thomas Mazloum and Meyer Werft CEO Jan Meyer signed the official documents transferring ownership of the ship. Numerous Meyer Weft and Disney executives witnessed the lowering of the Meyer Werft flag and the raising of the Disney Cruise Line flag on the mast.
Disney Cruise Line presented Meyer Werft with a Cinderella figurine commemorating the life-size bronze statue that will welcome passengers in the ship's Grand Ballroom. Following the ceremony, Captain Marco Nogara took the helm of the Disney Wish for the transatlantic voyage from Bremerhaven to its new home port of Port Canaveral.
June 9th was the original date Disney Cruise Line intended to send the Disney Wish on its maiden voyage; however, some construction delays prevented it.
From Bremerhaven, the Disney Wish will sail along the coast of the Netherlands, through the English Channel, and stop in the Azores on June 13. The 144,000-gross-ton, liquefied natural gas-powered cruise ship will arrive at its new home port on June 20.
After completing its inaugural voyage, which begins on July 14, the Disney Wish will sail on three- and four-night itineraries from Port Canaveral to Nassau in the Bahamas and Disney's private island, Castaway Cay.
With the arrival of the Disney Wish, Disney's cruise fleet now consists of five ships. This number will increase again with the two sister ships of the Disney Wish, scheduled for delivery in 2024 and 2025.
