The Port of Motril has kicked off the 2022 cruise season with the Spirit of Discovery, operated by Saga Cruises. The ship arrived at the port in Granada with 620 passengers on board, mostly British, who enjoyed various scenic itineraries along the Costa Tropical, including Motril, Salobreña, and Almuñécar. In addition to the passengers, there are 459 crew members. Having departed from Palma de Mallorca, the cruise ship's next port of call is Cádiz. Motril Shipping acted as the shipping agent in Motril.
The inaugural cruise of the season has been supported by the institutions that are part of the destination: the Provincial Council of Granada, the Motril City Council and, of course, the Port Authority.
The forecast for this year is 22 port calls, representing a 300% increase compared to 2021, when eight ships were recorded. “We will continue working because we understand that the cruise industry is very positive for employment in the region, as demonstrated by the deployment of personnel it generates each time a ship arrives.”.
The Spirit of Discovery is a young cruise ship. It was delivered to Saga Cruises in June 2019, becoming the company's first newly built vessel. It has a capacity of 1,000 passengers and is characterized by a small-ship style with high standards of customer service.
