MEYER WERFT has delivered the Odyssey of the Seas to Royal Caribbean Group. The Quantum Ultra-class cruise ship marks the completion of a series of five ships whose construction began in January 2013 with the launch of the Quantum of the Seas.
“Royal Caribbean Group commissioned us in 2011 to build the first two Quantum-class ships, which have been very popular with passengers since day one. To date, we have built a total of five ships, all of which have been delivered since 2014,” says Stephan Schmees, a member of the Ship Project Management Executive Board.
The Quantum class represents one of the largest series of vessels that MEYER WERFT has built to date. The construction of the five sister ships comprises a total of 840,000 GT and includes, among other things, 11,000 kilometers of cable lines, 2,000 kilometers of pipelines, and 10,500 EMS PreCab passenger cabins.
“We successfully delivered Papenburg’s third cruise ship to our customers during the pandemic. This is an important sign of the strength of our shipyard and the industry as a whole. However, given our tight order book, we still face significant challenges. If we secure a strong future order package through 2025, we have every chance of securing the company and many jobs in Papenburg with our existing orders,” says Jan Meyer, Managing Director of MEYER WERFT.
With the Quantum class, engineers have once again brought a host of innovations to the sea. Like its sister ships Quantum of the Seas, Anthem of the Seas, Ovation of the Seas, and Spectrum of the Seas, the latest ship from MEYER WERFT features the 90-meter-high North Star glass observation gondola, the FlowRider surf simulator, the RipCord by iFly skydiving simulator, and the Sky Pad, a virtual reality and bungee trampoline experience located at the stern of the ship.
The Odyssey of the Seas has 169,000 GT, a length of 347.1 meters, a beam of 41.4 meters and a capacity for 4,210 passengers.
As an evolution of the Quantum class, the Odyssey of the Seas, like its four sister ships, features state-of-the-art exhaust gas treatment systems, including hybrid scrubbers and SCR catalytic converters. Highly energy-efficient technical systems, optimized hydrodynamics, intelligent heat recovery, and numerous other features enable significant energy savings. A diesel-electric propulsion system, comprehensive alarm and security systems, interactive communication systems, and cutting-edge technology ensure safety and entertainment in accordance with the highest technical standards.
After its delivery to the shipping company, the Odyssey of the Seas will leave Bremerhaven. On June 2, the ship will depart from Haifa, Israel, to begin cruises in the Mediterranean Sea.
