Born in Asturias and a graduate in Nautical Studies and Maritime Transport from the University of Oviedo, he also held an MBA from the European Institute of Maritime Studies and a master's degree in Maritime Traffic from the Polytechnic University of Madrid. After working as an officer in various shipping companies for ten years, he joined the Port Authority of Huelva in 1996, serving as Director of Operations and, later, as Commercial Director.
Vega was in Asturias during the Christmas holidays and disappeared on December 29th, while walking through the Asturian town of San Esteban de Pravia; after her disappearance, more than 200 people participated in the search operation, which ended last Saturday, January 9th, with the tragic outcome.
In a statement released by the Port Authority of Huelva, President Pilar Miranda expressed her deep sorrow "at the tragic passing of our colleague and friend Manolo, a wonderful person, an example of professionalism and dedication to his work, whom we will always remember." She added: "I would like to send his family and friends our heartfelt support and affection during this difficult time and to let them know that we share their grief at this irreparable loss of an exceptional person, both personally and professionally, who was much loved by all his colleagues and by all members of the port community.".
In addition to sending its support to the family and friends of the deceased, the Port Authority of Huelva also expressed its gratitude to all those involved in the search operation. “We also extend our thanks to State Ports and the 28 port authorities that make up the system, who have been fully committed and offered their assistance whenever needed.”.
