Carnival Corporation & plc announced an agreement with shipbreaking and recycling specialists EGE CELIK and SIMSEKLER to responsibly dismantle and recycle two of its ships, the Carnival Fantasy and Carnival Inspiration. These 70,367 gross registered tons ships, built in 1990 and 1996 respectively, each have a capacity of 2,056 passengers at double occupancy.
Carnival Corporation worked with the non-profit environmental organization Bellona Foundation, a leading partner of the NGO Shipbreaking Platform, and ship recycling experts Sea2Cradle to plan the proper dismantling and recycling of the ships.
Bellona Foundation helped find the best solutions in shipbreaking yards to reuse or recycle retired ships, in accordance with Carnival Corporation's commitment to a sustainable cruise industry.
“Our greatest responsibility and priority is compliance with the law, environmental protection, and the safety and well-being of our guests, the communities we visit, and our crew,” said Bill Burke, chief maritime officer of Carnival Corporation. “This commitment extends to our cruise ships, beginning the moment a ship joins our fleet and continuing until its retirement. In addition to limiting the environmental impact of our vessels while they are part of our fleet, recycling our retired ships in accordance with the European Ship Recycling Regulation ensures that the highest standards are applied and contributes to a sustainable cruise industry.”.
