In what could be the first “virtual” delivery of a cruise ship, Celebrity Cruises officially accepted the delivery of the Celebrity Apex via a video conference with officials from the Chantiers de l'Atlantique shipyards.
According to tradition, Captain Dimitris Kafetzis ordered the change of the French flag to the American flag, while the anthems of the respective nations were heard.
“Every delivery is unique, just as every ship is unique. While the circumstances are truly unique right now, it makes sense that a ship as innovative as Celebrity Apex would have a digital-age delivery,” said Lisa Lutoff Perlo, president and CEO of Celebrity Cruises. “This day is so significant because I know the dedication and commitment of the shipyard team, the crew onboard, and our Celebrity shore team who all contributed to bringing this ship to life. Celebrity Apex is a magnificent ship, and I am so proud to welcome her to our family.”

The Celebrity Apex is exceptional, and we know it will be well received and enjoyed for many years to come,” said Laurent Castaing, CEO of Chantiers de l'Atlantique.
“I hope the waters will calm down so we can welcome our guests aboard our newest addition to our beautiful fleet. I’m really looking forward to its maiden voyage from Barcelona on May 20,” added Lutoff-Perlo.
