Bob Chapek, chairman of Walt Disney Parks and Resorts, announced the company's plans to add a seventh ship to the Disney Cruise Line fleet, offering families more opportunities to create memories at sea and visit spectacular destinations around the world.
Last year, Disney Cruise Line announced the construction of two new ships at the Meyer Werft shipyard in Germany, with completion dates scheduled for 2021 and 2023. The seventh ship will be built at the same shipyard and is scheduled for completion in 2022.
“We decided that two ships wouldn’t be enough to host all the exciting experiences we’ve been dreaming up to take family cruise vacations to a new and exciting Disney level,” Chapek said. “When the three new ships are sailing, we will have nearly doubled our existing fleet.”.
Ship names, design plans and itineraries are still under development, but they will be powered by liquefied natural gas and will be the same size – approximately 135,000 gross tons with about 1,250 guest cabins.
Since its launch in 1998, Disney Cruise Line has provided family cruise vacations combining Disney magic with the wonder of exploring different parts of the world. With the launch of the Disney Dream and Disney Fantasy in 2011 and 2012, the company introduced several firsts, including a water mountain at sea (AquaDuck) and virtual windows in interior staterooms (Magical Portholes) that offer real-time views of the ocean, along with animated Disney characters.
