In Summer 2017, the boutique cruise company Variety Cruises will operate a new itinerary: “Iceland: A Journey Through the Land of Fire and Ice,” a week-long yacht cruise around this northern European island.
Sailing aboard the M/Y Callisto, the newest addition to the Variety Cruises fleet – with a maximum capacity of 35 passengers – this new itinerary aims to offer the opportunity to discover this country of great landscapes and the legacy of the Viking and Nordic conquerors.
During the first day of the itinerary, guests will take the Ring Road (the island's main road) to reach Godafoss Waterfall – the Waterfall of the Gods – and then continue on to Lake Myvatn, Namarskard and Dimmuborgir.
Arriving at the fishing port of Siglufjordur – practically in the Arctic – the following day, passengers can enjoy a walking tour of the town with important stops at the Herring Museum and the Folk Music Centre. On the third day of the program, the cruise will arrive in Isafjordur, a significant Icelandic fishing port in the Westfjords region, known for its rich cultural heritage, with many houses and shops dating back to the 19th century.
In Bildudalur, travelers can visit the village and the Sea Monster Museum, before continuing to sail along the coast of the Westfjords, passing by the Latrabag cliffs, which rise 450 meters above sea level.
Upon arriving in Borgarnes, cruise passengers will have the option of visiting Deildartunguhver, Europe's most powerful geothermal spring, as well as Barnafoss waterfall. The yacht will also stop in Reykholt, once one of the island's major intellectual centers, before continuing on to the Westfjords.
On Heimaey Island, the Pompeii of the North, travelers will discover a community that nearly disappeared in 1973 due to an eruption that devastated 400 homes. The tour also includes visits to two volcanoes and the Eldheimar Geological Museum. The cruise will end in Reykjavík.
