The Port Authority of the Bay of Cádiz plans an investment of 45 million euros in 2015

The Investment Plan includes an allocation of 38.6 million euros for the New Container Terminal.

The Port Authority of the Bay of Cadiz has an investment budget of 45,049 million euros in 2015, the largest annual budget in its history.

The 2014-2018 Investment Plan, included in the 2015 Business Plan, has been ratified by the Board of Directors at its recent meeting and includes an allocation of 38.6 million euros for the New Container Terminal, which is still under construction and is scheduled to be completed next year.

This infrastructure has garnered the Port Authority's investment efforts since it began in 2011. As is known, the new container terminal planned for the Cádiz Dock is located between the Levante breakwater and Navantia's Pier Number 5 and will have, in its first phase, an area of 22 hectares (38 hectares in the second phase); 590 meters of quay (1,065 meters in the second phase); with a draft of 16 meters.

The first phase, currently underway, has a total investment of 78 million euros, financed with a 60 million euro grant from the European Union's ERDF funds

This infrastructure was created with a multiple objective:

– Boosting container traffic in the Bay of Cádiz, with a modern terminal designed to accommodate large container ships. Deeper draft and larger surface area than the current one.

– Consolidation of the port as a socio-economic engine (4-3 jobs/1,000 tons)

– Reorganization of port traffic. Separation of passengers and cargo. Two consequences:

It will move traffic away from the city center to a better-located area, very close to the second bridge.

It will allow cruise ship traffic to be concentrated in the commercial dock

– Environmental recovery of the Bay

– Strengthening the relationship between the port and the city, as it generates a growth area of 250,000 square meters for complementary uses related to leisure, recreation, commerce, and nautical sports activities, in the heart of the city.

Also for 2015, the Port Authority plans to allocate 17 million euros to the construction of the access road to the new terminal, awarded last October for a total amount of 24 million euros and which will begin construction before the end of 2014.

Due to the location of the new terminal—between the Levante dock and Navantia Cádiz's Pier Number 5—the access road must cross the land belonging to Navantia's concession. Therefore, for reasons of safety and operational efficiency, an underground passage was chosen, which will run beneath the concession land and, once past it, will ascend to the landfill of the new terminal

The planned false tunnel, with a rectangular cross-section, will be 1,308 meters long, 6.5 meters high and 13 meters wide, divided into two lanes, one in each direction, of 3.50 meters each; a median separating the directions of 0.50 meters; shoulders of 1.50 meters; two channels of 0.50 meters and a sidewalk of 1.50 meters.

Also related to the new terminal, the Investment Plan includes 200,000 euros for the archaeological work resulting from the construction.

In El Puerto de Santa María, the Investment Plan includes 200,000 euros for the basic urbanization of the industrial expansion area in 2015 and 600,000 euros for the conditioning of the old fishing area.

In terms of security and protection, the Port Authority has planned an allocation of 1.35 billion euros for the development and implementation of the SECURE project, which has a financial allocation of 1.717 billion euros – from the FEDER Operational Programme for Research, Development and Innovation for the benefit of Companies-Technological Fund, within the Community Framework 2007-2013.

The SECURE project falls within the Smart Port concept and aims to make its infrastructures and services more interactive, efficient and geared towards meeting the needs of its clients and users, through the use of new technologies.
