According to a study by Royal Caribbean International, 53% of Spaniards need only one to two weeks to plan their trip. Along with Italy, they are the least likely to plan. Furthermore, 38% of Spaniards are more impulsive when traveling, second only to the Irish (43%). Among Spaniards who have previously taken a cruise, improvisation is even more prevalent: 46% book their vacations more impulsively than before.

These are some of the conclusions of the pan-European study analyzing new travel trends, in which 14,000 people from Spain, Germany, Italy, Ireland, Norway, the United Kingdom and Sweden participated.
The study also shows that 65% of Spaniards consider cruises a good last-minute holiday option, followed by Swedes (64%), a significant difference from the rest of the European countries studied.
As Sergio Arévalo, Sales Director for Spain at Royal Caribbean International, explains, “We’re seeing increasing dynamism in our bookings. While our guests used to plan their trips further in advance, there’s now a greater response to special offers and campaigns like Black Friday and Cyber Monday, as well as last-minute bookings. I think our guests know perfectly well that they’ll have a memorable vacation with Royal Caribbean , which makes it a simple and completely trustworthy decision.”
The study also yields the following conclusions:
- 32% of Spaniards prefer to visit different destinations on their holidays, and young people are the ones who want to make the most of their trips: 40% of those under 34 want to enjoy several destinations during their holidays. The study shows that this trend decreases with age: only 18% of those over 65 are interested in visiting multiple locations.
- Eighty-two percent of Spaniards believe that vacations are a time to try new experiences and step outside their comfort zone, so many set personal goals for this period. Among the most frequently mentioned goals, Spaniards top the list of countries surveyed when it comes to visiting new countries (52%) and trying exotic food (51%), with improving physical fitness coming in third (34%). A cruise would be the dream trip for 22% of Spaniards, second only to Italians.
- 58% book a trip directly if they find a good deal, with young people being the most impulsive: 65% of those under 34 book immediately if they find a bargain. 24% of this age group also report booking a trip without any planning and even going to the airport without a predefined destination to embark on a vacation.
- 46% prefer to travel as a couple, followed by with children (27%), or with friends (26%). However, 20% of those surveyed stated they are considering a solo trip in the next two years.
- 30% of women prefer to travel with friends (rather than with children; 25%), while the situation is reversed in the case of men: 29% prefer to travel with children, compared to 21% who prefer to travel with friends.
The study's findings highlight that a cruise can be the ideal vacation option because it addresses many of the expressed needs: visiting multiple destinations on a single trip, enjoying a wide range of experiences for all ages and groups, whether families or friends, and in general, new adventures for an unforgettable vacation.

For more than 50 years, Royal Caribbean has been creating memorable family vacations and getaways with friends around the world. The adventures that await travelers in each destination are combined with a variety of exclusive onboard experiences, such as SeaPlex, the largest indoor-outdoor activity complex at sea; North Star, an all-glass observation pod 300 feet above the water; and the RipCord by iFly skydiving simulator.
